In June, nine Tafties completed the school's fifth service trip to Guatemala.
"The group is centered in and around Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one-time colonial capital of Central America," explains leader David Dethlefs. "While the trip is focused on building houses for families in need, students also helped with food distribution and spent time with youngsters at an elementary school."
During the weekend they visited the Mayan ruins at Ixmiche, Lago de Atitlan, and Chichicastenango, one of the largest indigenous markets in Central America.
In addition to learning building skills and practicing Spanish (not necessary but helpful!), students have an opportunity to experience a vibrant and rich culture. Taft has now completed thirteen houses in Guatemala.
