The Taft Gender Committee will sponsor a screening of the acclaimed documentary, Miss Representation on Friday, April 13 in Bingham Auditorium. The 90-film will air at 6:00 p.m.; a one-hour, facilitated discussion will follow in the faculty room.
Miss Representation (TV-14 DL) exposes ways in which mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) acquired the film for their documentary film club immediately following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last year. To date, more than 1.4 million viewers have seen the documentary on OWN; non-profit organizations, educational institutions and corporations around the world are also screening the film.
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation challenges the way the media portrays women and girls by attacking the pervasive and collective message that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. It includes personal stories from teenage girls and insightful interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, including Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem.
